The Good Life In New Bern North Carolina |
New
Bern, North Carolina A Great Place To Call Home
Sailors
and "landlubbers" enjoy New Bern's many sailing
regattas. The regattas, held year-round, attract hundreds
of sailors, would-be sailors, and spectators. The annual
Michelob Regatta featured over 90 entries alone. For
hikers and campers, Croatan National Forest offers 155,000
acres of forest, 40 miles of streams, and 4,300 acres of lakes.
Fisherman can cast their lines year-round into the Neuse River,
reeling in bass, catfish, bream, flounder, and drum.
Several major fishing tournaments are held in and around New
Bern during the summer and fall. New Bern suits golfers
to a tee. The area features seven acclaimed, championship
18-hole golf courses with waterfront fairways, pro shops and
PGA staff members. The City of New Bern and Craven County
governments sponsor two diverse recreation departments with
youth sports, adult leagues, and senior activities.
Both recreation departments operate ball fields, public parks,
boat launching ramps, and other educational and recreational
programs. The YMCA and a private sports club offer even
more recreational diversities. |

The Arts
The arts are
a vibrant part of New Bern's character. Contemporary
visual and performing arts draw from New Bern's historical
traditions. For example, the Craven Consort is an assembly
of recorder musicians who incorporate violin and cello for
an acoustic, baroque sound. The Craven Historical Dancers,
perform baroque and Renaissance dances. The Sounds of
Summer is an outdoor concert series at Union Point Park along
the waterfront. Contemporary local bands offer free
entertainment. The Jazz Brunch features regional jazz
trios and quartets that play to sold-out audiences.
The Atlantic Dance Theatre, a professional dance company,
performs in Craven County for general audiences. For
classical tastes, Craven Concerts, Inc. sponsors four major
concerts annually, including one by the North Carolina Symphony.
Also, Pro Musica, a group of a capella singers. perform madrigal,
classical and pop music for concerts and festivals.
Art lovers will want to visit the Craven Arts Council and
Gallery. Housed in a former turn-of-the-century band
building, the council hosts nine exhibits annually.
Theater lovers will enjoy performances by the New Bern Civic
Theatre. In 1993, the Theatre celebrated 25 years of
producing comedies, dramas, musicals and concerts. Training
and performing includes all ages. |

Festivals
and Events
While
New Bern's historic charm is a popular tourist attraction, our
fall arts and crafts festival attracts many visitors as well.
The annual Chrysanthemum Festival, sponsored by Swiss Bear,
in cooperation with Tryon Palace Historic
Sites and Gardens. Held the second weekend in October
- just when the air becomes cool and the leaves start to turn
- the Chrysanthemum Festival is a weekend extravaganza of arts,
crafts and music. Festival-goers can enjoy performances
by street musicians, browse among the works of local artists,
attend a quilt show, or kick up their heels at the Octoberfest.
"This is more than a street festival," says Susan
Moffat, Director of Swiss Bear. "It's a great gala
event. Each year presents new activities. In the
past we've had antique car shows, Civil War reenactments, a
quilt show, Coast Guard ships, and hot air balloons. Also
Tryon Palace opens their gardens free of charge each year."
In the spring you'll want to see the Historic Homes and Gardens
Tour, jointly sponsored by the New Bern Historical Society and
the New Bern Preservation Foundation. This Historical
Society hosts and autumn "New Bern at Night" tour
of homes, which features local actors in 18th and 19th century
dress. Sports
enthusiasts, conservationists, and art lovers will enjoy the
Annual North Carolina Wildlife and Sportsman's Show, sponsored
by the New Bern Area Chamber of Commerce. The wildlife
show features art and educational display booths on wildlife
and conservation, with artists and carvers from around the nation
in attendance. |
Shopping
and Antiquing
Craven County offers many shopping opportunities,
from large department stores to specialty shops and boutiques.

New Bern offers many shopping centers.
Shopping opportunities continue to expand in Havelock,
where there is plenty of variety. Among these are furniture
stores, gift shops, music stores, and military surplus outlets,
just to name a few. As a visitor to Craven County, your
shopping experience is sure to be one of the highlights of your
stay! |

Marine Corps Air Station, located just east of New Bern.
Cherry Point is the world's largest Marine Corps air station.
Approximately 9,000 Marines are based here. Civilian
employment on base totals 2,670 workers and 152 non-governmental
workers. Commissary, Exchange and hospital facilities
