New Bern, North Carolina Real Estate
New Bern: Three Centuries of North Carolina Heritage
New Bern, the second oldest town in North Carolina and its first permanent capital, reflects history around every corner with over 150 landmarks, the magnificent Tryon Palace, the birthplace of Pepsi Cola and a 157,000-acre national forest. The community, named for Bern, Switzerland, was originally settled by German and Swiss families. After the Revolution, the city prospered through exports of tobacco, molasses and lumber to New England ports.
The centerpiece attraction, Tryon Palace Historic Sites and Gardens, is the restored home of British Royal Governor William Tryon, built between 1767-1770. Over the next century and a half, New Bern had one of the largest population of free blacks before and after the Civil War. During the war, the city served as Union headquarters for Gen. Ambrose E. Burnside.
New Bern has an abundance of natural resources. The city sits at the confluence of the Neuse and Trent Rivers and is only 35 miles from the Atlantic Ocean. The city abounds with historical traditions, distinctive cultural charm, and unsurpassed opportunities. New Bern’s climate is generally mild because of its proximity to the Gulf Stream, and visitors and residents alike enjoy fishing, boating, golfing, and antique shopping in the atmosphere and climate of a year-round resort.
